Pre market trading in India: Step by step guide

As far as Indian stock market is concerned, there are 4 market sessions:
Session                                                                                           Timing
1) Pre-open Session                                                            09:00 AM to 09:15 AM
2) Trading Session                                                              09:15 AM to 03:30 PM
3) Closing Session                                                               03:40 PM to 04:00 PM
4) After hours market session                                          04:00 PM to 09:08 AM or 09:15 AM

After hours market session is known as After Market Orders (AMO) session or Overnight orders session.
It is important to note that actual trading does not happen in After hours Market session i.e, stock prices do not change in After hours Market session. You can just place your order in After hours Market Order. Basically, After hours market session is meant for those investors who do not have access to the normal trading hour due to their busy schedule or some other reasons.

How it works ?

After Market Order can be placed after normal market hours and before the next day’s trading session. All the After Market Orders would go to the exchange in the normal trading session i.e, for the scrips which are part of the pre-open session. 09:00 AM to 09:15 AM is the pre opening session.

The pre-open session lasts for 15 minutes from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM, and is divided into three parts:
9:00 to 9:08 : In the first 8 minutes You can place the order, you can also modify or cancel the order in this session. Order entry session will randomly stop anytime between the 7th & 8th minute.

9:08 to 9:12 : In the next 4 minutes price discovery, order matching and the trade confirmation will be done, and orders will be executed. Order modification or cancellation would not be allowed in this session.

9:12 to 9:15: The next 3 minutes are used to facilitate the transition from pre-open to regular session.

Only NIFTY and SENSEX scrips at NSE and BSE respectively, have been enabled for trading in the Pre-open session by the exchanges. Scrips which will get excluded or included in the NIFTY or SENSEX indices will still be a part of the pre-open session.

You can place After Market Orders orders up to 09.08 a.m. and in the case of other scrips which do not form part of the pre-open session you can place After Market Orders till the beginning of normal market session i.e. 09.15 a.m.
In the After Market Orders, you need to choose a price which is 5% more or less than the closing price. For example, if the closing price of Infosys is Rs. 1000, you have the option of choosing a price in the range of Rs. 950 and 1050.
